President Trump is once again railing against the US Intelligence Community, claiming that they are providing “illegal leaks” to the press. While there has been information heading to the press regarding alleged ties between Russia and members of the Trump administration, Mr. Trump has offered no specific evidence that the information is coming directly from intelligence agencies.
Reuters reported today on the Administrations comments regarding the allegation of the administration’s ties to Russia, coming on the heels of the National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn, stepping down due to inappropriate conversations with the Kremlin regarding sanctions. I would think our president should be very concerned over potential inappropriate communications between his closest advisors and one of our historic rivals in the world. However, he has been consistent in rejecting any information related to a potential Russian malign influence in our affairs, even as their acts become more provocative.
His continued refusal to hear what the IC is telling him is detrimental to Trump and to the IC’s standing in the minds of Americans. It is worth again reminding the members of the IC that there are some who still appreciate their efforts.
Recently our President-Elect, while dismissing out of hand assessments by the Intelligence Community that all evidence points to Russian hacking during the presidential campaign with the intent to influence the outcome, said that:
“… I know a lot about hacking. And hacking is a very hard thing to prove. So it could be somebody else. And I also know things that other people don’t know, and so they cannot be sure of the situation.”
Wow! Our soon-to-be-President has some kind of special access to information that is beyond the scope of even our vast array of intelligence agencies? I wonder what that source could be?
